What is 'The Machine'?
You awake into an white void. In front of you there is an odd machine. What do you do? The Machine is a game about time travel, the choices you make and their impact on the future.
It features multiple decisions to make, items to collect, puzzles to solve and various different endings that relate to your actions.
Sci-Fi Visual Novel made using the Fungus package for Unity.
The main aim of this project was to develop a branching narrative that has multiple options for the player to choose that each can leade to separate endings, which can be seen in its entirety in the fungus flowchart below.
The orignal inspiration of the project is an episode of Futurama in which they can only travel forwards in time, ending up stuck in the future, later discovering that if they just keep going forward, the universe is reborn, almost identically. I also took inspiration from the tone of Futurama deciding on a lighthearted comedic approach, with some poignant parts scattered in.
From this, with further inspiration from The Stanley Parable I made it so that whenever the player reaches an ending they simply loop back to the start of the game, allowing them to make different decisions, and exploring all of the possible avenues/endings, without it feeling like they have lost the game. It was also important for the game to be a satisfying length, and based on some decisions the game can end incredibly quickly.
